The New Name of Facebook is Meta and the Future is in the Metaverse!!!
During the Facebook Connect event, Mark Zuckerberg announced the Californian giant’s new name and logo.
Mark Zuckerberg is trying to escape the present with a new name, acknowledging that “some would say now is not the time to focus on the future”. We have important issues to deal with. »
Yesterday, during the Facebook Connect event, the 37-year-old CEO renamed his company: it is now called Meta and its logo is a kind of infinity symbol, a little crushed, in blue. The names of the various applications and platforms Facebook (as a social network), Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram and Oculus have not changed, and the structure of the company remains unchanged, although, from December 1, the shares will trade under the name “MVRS”.
Building the Metaverse
The stated objective is to adapt the image of the giant of Menlo Park to its new mission: the construction of the metaverse , “the evolution of the mobile Internet” in which Facebook – or rather Meta – has invested around 10 billion dollars by 2021. At the same time, Zuckerberg is diverting attention from the original brand, now associated with misinformation and the circulation of divisive content, which is going through one of the worst crises in its history after the leak of documents internal reports by whistleblower Frances Haugen. Yesterday the Wall Street Journal reported that Haugen’s revelations were also in the crosshairs of the US Federal Trade Commission.
According to Mr. Zuckerberg, over the next ten years, his metaverse and at least a billion people will have other fish to fry. In the metaverse, in fact: a “virtual environment” in which one can enter and exit without simply looking at a screen. A kind of three-dimensional Internet , where people can meet, play, go to a concert or the stadium, work and shop in the form of avatars capable of reproducing facial expressions and body language and l using virtual reality visors, augmented reality glasses and ad hoc applications.
A first step is the software already seen for remote meetings (like those that have characterized our daily lives since the start of the pandemic, but with avatars) Horizon Workrooms. The front door will be Horizon Home: the first thing you’ll see when you put on the Oculus Quest visor and the first space you can invite avatar friends into. “It will be years before it’s fully realized,” said vice president of global affairs Nick Clegg, who has been overseeing privacy and security since the beginning.
This is not a game that Facebook-Meta can imagine playing alone: “Teleporting to the metaverse will be like clicking a link on the internet: an open standard. We need interoperability,” Zuckerberg explained. Other companies like Epic Games and Microsoft are already working on it.
